Kampala, Uganda – July 15, 2022 – The Ministry of Health in conjunction with Xtraordinary Media has launched the third edition of the Heroes in Health Awards (HIHA) under the theme “Rebuilding the Health Sector with Innovation and Creativity.” The annual merit-based awards aim to recognize outstanding individuals, entities, organizations, services, products, and programs in the Ugandan health sector.
“Without our health workers, we are unable to achieve our desired impact. Our health workers work in the most resource-constrained settings, hard-to-reach areas, serving overwhelming numbers in a bid to save lives every day. We are cognizant of the fact that the health workers need to be motivated and recognized” Dr. Jane Ruth Aceng Ocero, the Minister for Health said during the launch.
Dr. Aceng added that the coronavirus pandemic has laid the groundwork to transform healthcare in Uganda. “We are now assessing how to move forward strategically to continue the momentum of innovation. How are health facilities, organizations, individuals, implementing partners, communities, and the health system positioning for the future in a post-pandemic world” she noted.
This year, the edition will particularly throw spotlight on:
- i) innovative and creative solutions to problems of efficiency, effectiveness, quality, sustainability, safety, and/or affordability of healthcare.
- ii) solutions that have addressed a problem by introducing a new or significantly different approach, concept, idea, service, process, technology, or product.
Candidates will be voted for by the public from 21 different categories. The voting will take place via www.hihaawards.com or written forms that will be picked up from various points in the country. The nominations will then be subjected to an evaluation by a seasoned panel of judges to ensure the accuracy of performance claims and that that nominated merit to be winners.
Nominations will run on various multimedia platforms from 15th July to 15th September 2022. For nominees to emerge as winners, there must be demonstrated evidence of extensive expertise and skills, dedication to service, and client satisfaction with an ongoing commitment to excellence and innovation demonstrated by the nominated individual or entity. By adhering to principles of evidence, transparency, competition, and efficiency, HIHA will identify high-value winners as examples that can be emulated throughout the continuum of Ugandan healthcare practice.
The 2022 HIHA winners will be announced at an Awards Gala ceremony scheduled for 24th November 2022 and officiated by H.E President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni.
The awards are supported by National Medical Stores (NMS), World Health Organization (WHO), UNICEF, The Parliament of Uganda, PSI Uganda, National Drug Authority (NDA), Clinton Health Access Initiative, Stanbic Bank, Microhaem Scientifics, Uganda Airlines, Uganda Communications Commission (UCC), MTN, Signature Africa and Next Media Group.
